History of Lodge Perseverance 338 SC

The history of Lodge Perseverance 338 SC dates back to 1828 when it was founded as Lodge Perseverance No. 818 of the EC. It later transitioned to the Scottish Constitution as Lodge No. 338. The lodge underwent several changes in its number due to timeline delays and messaging issues, ultimately being rectified to No. 338.

James Burnes played a significant role in the lodge’s history, becoming its master and later the Grand Master and RWM. The importance of Lodge Perseverance lies in its connection to the Royal Arch Chapter Perseverance No. 71, which was the oldest chapter in India and a vital catalyst for the creation of other chapters in the region. The lodge also played a pioneering role in Freemasonry, particularly in promoting inclusion and diversity, as evidenced by its association with the first lodge founded for admitting natives of India to the privileges of Freemasonry, Lodge Rising Star of Western India No. 342. Additionally, the lodge’s connection to the Tournament of Shadows, or the “Great Game,” further underscores its historical significance.
