Oldest lodge in Bombay is lodge Perseverance No.338

This was the last of the English lodges that were closed and saved by James Burnes.

The oldest lodge and chapter in of The Scottish constitution in Bombay .
The original lodge 818 of the English Constitution was in 1828.
Making lodge Perseverance the oldest lodge under the English constitution before it was converted to the Scottish Constitution. And the oldest Scottish lodge and chapter .


The oldest lodge which is attached directly to its chapter and comprising or the MMM/ HRA / RAM / Red Cross / Cryptic Degrees.

James Burnes KH FRS (12 February 1801–19 September 1862) was a Scottish doctor and surgeon in India, who became physician-general of Bombay. 

The Provost of Montrose was the head of the Montrose burgh council in Scotland. Provosts were elected by the council and served not only as the chairman of that body, but as a figurehead for the entire town. They were equivalent in many ways to the institution of mayor.

Each of the 32 Scottish local authorities elects a convener or provost, but it is only the four main cities, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Dundee that have a Lord Provost. This is enshrined in the Local Government etc. (Scotland) Act 1994.

Burnes was born on 12 February 1801 at Montrose, where his father James Burnes was Provost. He was a medical student at Edinburgh University, and London’s Guy’s Hospital and St Thomas’s Hospital

Initiated into Freemasonry in 1982 and passed and raised in the Lodge of Industry No 48 (EC) and made a Mark Master Mason in 1997 in Industry Lodge of Mark Master Masons No 293 (English Constitution).  Was Installed into the Chair of the Lodge of Industry (EC) in 1992, St John’s Lodge No 1712 (EC) in 1993 and Pons Aellii Lodge No 4523 (EC) in 1999.  Joined The Tweed Lodge of Kelso No 261 (SC) as an affiliate member in 2000.  The Lodge amalgamated with Kelso Lodge No 58 in 2011 and renamed as Lodge Kelso and Tweed No 58 (SC) And was Installed as RWM in 2017 and 2018.   Currently Provincial Senior Grand Deacon in the Provincial Grand Lodge of the Scottish Borders.
